2026 Munster SHC Final: Limerick 1-21 2-17 Cork

In weather conditions which resembled the murky depths of winter, these two juggernauts deliver an engrossing provincial final in Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

The provincial championships of 2026 have concluded. What have we learned? There is not a puck of a ball between Cork and Limerick. Would you not back for a fifth instalment in Croke Park in July?

Galway, Dublin, Clare and Offaly will have something to say about that but the intensity levels today compared to Croke Park were different levels. The atmosphere in Cork to Dublin chalk and cheese.

Cork with minimal shots attempted (26) were extremely proficient where as Limerick struggled on their shooting accuracy yielding only 51% from 22 out of 41 shots attempted.

Significant consideration has to be given to the inclement weather. The rain and blustery wind made conditions extremely difficult but there were significant contributions from either side.

Cork with the elements behind them in the opening half started the game well. An early penalty award from James Owens whose penalized Kyle Hayes for a hold on Brian Hayes. Mark Coleman slotted the ball home with aplomb.

Limerick had their moments but accuracy was an issue. Aaron Gillane was out of form in this encounter. Aidan O’Connor endured an inconsistent day on placed balls. Cathal O’Neill with an early goal chance thwarted by Patrick Collins.

Cork had an excellent spell between minute twenty and thirty. Several quality scores from O’Mahony, Coleman and an inspirational score from range by Robert Downey. Limerick asked the question before the break.

The answer was to reduce the gap to two points. Limerick’s ability to find players in space to the fore which complemented the early goal from Gearoid Hegarty who availed of a miscued Diarmuid Byrnes free from range. Downey switched off for a second, it was enough for the net to ripple.

With the conditions at Limerick’s backs, one would have presumed that Limerick would drive on with their traditional third quarter surge but it never came. Cork tenacity in the middle third and plundered a second goal. Hayes with an astute finish on his knees.

Cork will look at gilt edged opportunities for goals but they came up against Nicky Quaid who is a keeper for the ages. His save from Diarmuid Healy is save of the year candidate locked in.

The save from Mark Coleman a stunning effort changing position to dive low to propel the effort. Limerick’s back line cut open by Cork which will be scope for improvement.

Limerick only led this for seven minutes in the opening half but then found a way to win this fixture at the death. Cork missing placed balls and their composure exposed with back chat allowing Diarmuid Byrnes the opportunity to score from long range frees.

The game very much in the melting pot. Cian Lynch looking to setup others. Tom Morrissey winning dirty ball and contributing two vital points in the second half. The decision to switch the inside full forward to Peter Casey and Gearoid Hegarty game winning.

Aidan O’Connor and Shane O’Brien were ineffective as a full forward unit but they will learn from how Hegarty and Casey cohesion came to the fore at the death. Hegarty denied with a wonderful save from Collins but did score a point to level matters.

Peter Casey again haunted Cork in a major final. His point from the sideline evading Mark Coleman was inspirational and then gambled on breaking ball to score the decisive game winner within the allotted five minutes of time.

Cork now asked the question. Limerick’s half back and full back line now resolute as they crowded the space for Connolly, Hayes and Buckley to contribute. Cork now forced to hit long.

The ending of the game was controversial. A foul from Gearoid Hegarty resulting in one more placed ball for Cork. Communication issues within the Cork ranks. Coleman had the sliothar and then gave the ball to Collins. Two minutes over the allotted injury time, Cork management had to call the instruction to go for the point.

It never came. Collins deciding to take a short pass. O’Mahony’s strike was only midair as James Owens called proceedings. Cork will be frustrated but the free kick leadup exposed composure issues in the Cork sideline. The wrong message sent to Collins.

Given the horrific weather conditions, both sides delivered a pulsating encounter. Fine margins again on show. A 65 hitting the post, Quaid and Collins saves. This is a superb hurling and sporting rivalry.

Limerick regain the Mick Mackey Cup this. The four week will be gratefully received. Time for the bodies to heal. Cathal O’Neill in particular will need the time to recover with a hamstring issue. Limerick will watch on with interest to see Clare and Dublin quarter final fixture.

Cork will regroup. Ben O’Connor will not allow this Cork side to wallow in their self-pity for long. This was an attritional encounter so fresh bodies will be required for Offaly in two weeks time. Cork have a major say still in this All Ireland SHC series.

This Limerick side is era defining. An eighth consecutive Munster SHC final appearance. They have won seven out of the last nine Munster SHC finals since the provincial round robin was introduced back in 2017.

An exceptional group of men. John Kiely, Paul Kinnerk and selectors and backroom deserve huge credit for coming back year after year. This final appeared more sweeter and special for the group. The memories of 2025 Munster SHC final somewhat erased. Roll on the All Ireland series!
